End of Year

Hello Quest Families,

What a wild ride it has been!  We'd like to thank you for all of your support throughout this year and especially during the last few months.  While this was not the learning experience we had planned for our Quest students, we are so impressed with how students and families rallied to meet the challenge.

End of the Year Activities
Here are some fun videos and slideshows put together to celebrate the end of 5th grade:

Next Year
At this point, it looks like we will be back to school in the fall!  As we wait for further instructions from the AOE and HUUSD administration, Curtis and I will be planning fall curriculum.  Next year we will be focusing on world history for social studies and for science, ecosystems and Earth and space science.    This will include studies of world geography, early humans, ecosystems, astronomy, weather, and ancient cultures (including mythology).  Literacy will follow the social studies and science curriculum to create our integrated units.  We also will have our sixth grade play! These are really fun units, and we are looking forward to them in the 2020-2021 school year.

Waterbury Rally Against Racism
When: Sunday, June14, 2020, 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM

Hello Quest Families!

Students watching presentations during book groups

Here are some updates to our online learning.

Creating a schedule
If your student is struggling with online learning, one strategy is to create a schedule.  Set aside specific times when your student will work on different subjects.  If your student seems to be hitting a slump, have them join one of the optional activities.  There are writing groups, and math games, and soon, scientist groups.

Need help?
As a whole, Quest students are doing very well with online learning.  Although it is not ideal, it has given us some opportunities to work with students individually and in small groups on assignments.  If your student is struggling with work, please have them contact one of their teachers either via email or during office hours.  We can set up meetings to help them out.

What's due?
Student's can access the Quest schedule, or daily checklists to see what is due.  Students can also open their Google Classroom and they will see what is due in the box of their class.  The same applies to their SeeSaw class.

Coming to school to get belongings
Please see the Cougar Notes for times to pick up belongings from lockers.

New books
Your student is reading one of the following books.  These books are intended to look more closely at the lives of people during the Colonial and Revolutionary War periods of American history.  Your student is in a book group.  The times of these book groups can be found on the Quest page under "Book Groups."  Your student is also in a SeeSaw class for this book.  At the end of the week, I will be retiring the old SeeSaw classes so your student's SeeSaw is not so full.
Your student will have written work, and reading to do each week.
Here are the books:
Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis
Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson, The Winter People by Joseph Bruchac
Blood on the River by Eliza Carbone
The Winter People by Joseph Bruchac
The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare.
I am reading aloud Fever 1793 by Laurie Halse Anderson.  We will see how a young girl survives the 1793 Yellow Fever epidemic of Philadelphia!  The videos for the lessons I am giving can be found on both the weekly / daily schedule and the Quest Page.

Writing
We will focusing on narrative writing and persuasive writing these last five weeks.  Your student received a survey which asks them which type of writing they would like - mild, medium, or spicy, based on their need for challenge each week.   Students also have the ability to sign up for a writer's group.  These groups are usually introduced at the end of fifth grade, but are optional due to our current situation.  They are a great way to push student writing forward.  Please encourage your student to fill out this survey.

Cursive writing (!?)
They have also received a survey for cursive writing!!  I typically do not have time in my schedule to teach this, nor does everyone want to know!  However, I used to teach cursive, way back in the day.  I can teach it again, if anyone is interested :) There is no pressure to do this, I just thought I would offer.

Scientist's Groups
One last survey has gone out for students to join scientist groups (if they are interested).  Students will create a science fair like project based on a question of their choice.  If your student is interested, have them sign up!

April 14

Hello Questers!

For all who celebrate, Happy Passover, Happy Easter!

We hope you are all well during our stay at home order.  Mr. Taylor and I continue to refine our teaching so it best fits our distance learning.  Thank you for your feedback.

New(ish) website!
We continue to refine our website to make it easy for students and parents to use.  You will now see both a schedule (see the schedule tab) which outlines the week, and a daily checklist.  The daily checklist can be accessed by clicking on the different days on the first page of the website.  This screencast is being sent to students to preview some of these changes.

Time suggested for distance learning
The administrative team has suggested a time limit for instruction for students in grade 5/6.  The suggested time for 5/6 is 120-140 minutes per day.   This includes Applied Academics.  We are doing our best to comply with this suggestion.

In the daily checklist, you will see recommended times for each subject area.  These are suggested guidelines.  As we know, all students work at different rates.  If your student needs more work, see the optional work on the weekly schedule.  If your student is struggling with more than 5 hours of work a day, please let us know, and we can help your student manage time. Please let us know how the time is working out for your family.

Applied Academics
In the schedule we have created for students, we have included their AA assignments.  Most AA classes are requiring one assignment per week.  We have suggested which days students should work on each assignment, however, this is just a suggestion in an effort to help students stay organized.  Students are free to work on whichever AA assignment they want, when they want.

Model project this week
Your student has a project this week.  This project does not need to be elaborate.  It is further practice with creating / drawing models of scientific practices.  There is a slideshow on the website to help your student navigate this.

Book groups
Your student participates in a book group each week.  On our website, you will find a tab that will lead your student to readings and a link to the book group itself.

Hello Quest Families!

These past two weeks have been like nothing we have ever experienced.  We hope your families are healthy and well.  Governor Scott's message last night was a surprise for us all.   We are very sad that we will not be able to be with our team for the rest of the year.  We are all forging ahead to make the next weeks and months the best for you and your student.

Online learning
What's working?  What's not?  Please fill in the following survey to help us tailor our Quest Learning Grid.

Chromebooks
If you were unable to get your Chromebook, and would like it now, it's not too late!  Let us know and we can set up a time for you to pick it up.

Book Groups
Meg Libby and I (Melissa Williams) will be organizing packages of books to be sent to students.  Your student will receive a non-fiction and a fiction book to read.   I am hoping that the physical book will at least have some of the learning off computer!  We will start reading the nonfiction books about natural disasters / underwater exploration / mountain climbing.  Each book will have a separate time to meet online using Google Meet.  I will be sending out instructions for this later next week. Your student will have the option to use video, or just use audio.  The meetings will be on Thursdays.  Keep your eyes open for further instructions!

Video Tutorials and Chat with Teachers
As we forge ahead, we will be creating videos to help your student with their work.  If your student needs further help, feel free to email us.  We can set up a email chain, or a video chat with your student if that works well for you all.

Online Platforms
If you have any questions about online platforms, don't forget to check out our Resource Page!

We will be sending out our next newsletter on Sunday with more information as we receive it.

March 18

Hello Quest Families,

The Home Learning Plan for Quest students is now available on the Quest Website.  We will continue to work out the kinks of this learning plan as we go along.  Please ask questions as they arise so that we can best help you and your student during this time.

Office Hours:
While we will be working each day for school hours, we will set aside 10 - 12 for specific email / office hours.  We will dedicate that time to answering questions and emails from you and your student.

If you are looking for additional resources to use at home, here is a long list created by the Vermont School Library Association.

Video Conferencing:
We are also available to video conference with students throughout the day.  This can be for questions they have about work or just to say hi.  They can schedule an appointment by emailing Mr. Taylor, or filling out this form  for Mrs. Williams.    Mrs. Williams can work on individual spelling, reading, writing, science, and social studies goals!!  We will do this through Google Hangouts.

March 16

Dear Quest Families,

While these times are filled with uncertainty, we are hoping to provide some structure around what the Quest student experience will look like over the next few weeks.  Our website has been updated and is full of resources and schedules to help you and your student navigate learning while we are apart.  The homepage has a 'Schedule for Home Learning'.  This will guide them through what assignments/activities should be completed each day.  It is expected that students are keeping up with the work assigned in this document.  This document is a work in progress and will be completed by the end of the day tomorrow.

Here is a sample schedule that could be used for structuring your 'home school' days:

9:00 Set the Stage - Look over your assignments for the day.
9:15 Math - Complete the Math lesson for the day.
10:00 Break - Grab a snack and take time to move around inside or outside.
10:30 WSAS - Complete the WSAS assignments for the day.
11:30 Lunch - Have lunch and take time to move around inside or outside.
12:30 Reading - Independent Reading (Record on your table on Google Classroom)
1:00 AA - Complete an AA Activity
1:30 PE/WL - Complete a PE or World Language Activity
2:00 Anchor Activities or Band/Chorus or Break for the day

Student Chromebooks are available for pickup Tuesday if students need them.

Student-led conferences will not be taking place at this time.

This is new territory for Team Quest, so please feel free to send us your feedback and questions.  Thank you all for your support through these challenging times.

Sincerely,
Melissa & Curtis
